Negotiation News

    August 27,  2004                                                                      Volume #1  Number #8

Negotiations were suspended during the week of August 16th due to Hurricane Charley which hit the West Coast of Florida extremely hard on Friday, August 13, and devastated many of our fellow Sisters and Brothers homes. As a result, the Union’s Negotiating Committee and Staff went to work in the field.

Part of the Union’s Committee performed their regular restoration duties while Business Manager, Brian Thompson, Committeemen, George Skillas, Wendell Mixon, Assistant Business Manager, Gary Aleknavich, President of the System Council, Rick Curtis and PSL Safety Committeeman, Marshall Smith loaded tools, supplies, and equipment and headed to aid employees in need of assistance. The Group visited retirees as well as active employee’s homes and worked primarily in the Arcadia, Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte areas. Below are a few pictures of the Union “Home Restoration Team” who worked sheeting roofs, drying in leaking roofs, boarding up broken windows, hooking up generators, cutting trees and cleaning up employees homes.

The AFL-CIO has been working with the American Red Cross to provide disaster relief to Union Members who have been affected by the hurricane. Labor Liaisons have been assigned to the Red Cross to assist our members who are in need of assistance or are in need of services. They have set up a hotline number and asked for our assistance in identifying those members. If you or someone that you know needs assistance please call 1-800-GET-INFO to speak with a Red Cross worker who will assist in meeting individual needs with the following information:

Name

Address (of the affected home)

Work Phone

Home Phone

Local Union and Phone Number

Local Union Contact Person

If you are unable to make contact through the above number, please do not hesitate to contact the System Council Office at 561-624 2700 with the same information ad we will assist you in making contact with on of the Liaisons.

This week the Negotiating Committee met with the Company on Monday August 23, and discussed medical funding as well as benefits. Tuesday, Wednesday, and part of Thursday were spent discussing Nuclear proposals. Some of the discussions focused on license retention increases, RO and SRCO upgrades, percentages of direct hires into the license operator classification and the career path. Thursday’s afternoon discussions dealt with the funding mechanism for our medical plan and actuarial projections.

We would like to thank you for your efforts during Hurricane Charley. The professionalism and safety displayed has been recognized throughout the brotherhood as well as FPL. A special thanks to all who gave a helping hand both at home and away.

Next week we anticipate further discussions with the Nuclear Business Unit dealing with maintenance issues and training programs as well as beginning discussions on benefits.
